Global Representation & Data Trends: Leading Industries where Women are in Leadership Roles

Women’s participation in patenting is highest in Biotechnology & Pharmaceuticals (63% listing at least one woman) and Chemistry/Materials (47%). The fastest-growing sectors for female participation over recent years are ICT (Information & Communication Technology) and Electrical Engineering. Data from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) shows a stark difference in female participation across technical fields. Where women are leading, where they face the largest gaps, and where the fastest growth is occurring highlights key industry dynamics:[1]

1. High Representation: Life Sciences & Chemistry


The life sciences sector has long been the strong suit for women in patenting.

  • Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology: Roughly 63% of all international patent applications in these sectors list at least one woman on the inventive team. When looking at specific sub-fields, areas like Food Chemistry (~32%), Biotechnology (~31%), and Pharmaceuticals (~30%) feature the highest overall concentration of individual female inventors.

  • Chemistry & Materials: Close to 47% of patents in general chemistry and materials science include female inventors.

  • Why this domain? Academia and industry pipelines in biochemistry, medicine, and life sciences historically attract higher ratios of women at the graduate and post-doctoral research levels compared to traditional engineering, translating directly into higher patent output.


2. Fastest Growth: Tech & Electronics

While life sciences leads in total volume, Information & Communication Technology (ICT) and electrical engineering are where women are making the fastest relative gains:

  • Information & Communication Technologies (ICT): Participation has surged, with ~35% of patents now listing at least one female inventor: an increase of roughly 13 percent over the past decade.

  • Electronics & Electrical Engineering: Reached around 30% team representation, up 12 percentage points over the same timeframe.

  • The Driver: The rapid expansion of corporate tech R&D teams and explicit diversity initiatives in global tech giants (like Huawei, Samsung, and Qualcomm) have accelerated female inclusion in multi-inventor hardware/software filings.

3. Persistent Low Representation: Mechanical & Traditional Engineering

  • Mechanical Engineering: This remains the sector with the largest gender disparity, where only ~26% of patents list at least one woman.

  • Solo Filings vs. Collaborative Teams: Across all sectors, and particularly in mechanical and heavy industrial engineering, women are significantly more likely to be named as part of a collaborative team rather than as a solo inventor.
